SpainLa Bobadilla Luxury Agroturismo, near to both Granada and the Costa del Sol, Spain, looks, from a distance, like a classic, white washed village tucked away in the hills of Andalusia. Up close all is revealed; a Moorish style palace and a series of old manor farmhouse buildings converted into what is now undoubtedly one of the best luxury hotels in rural Andalusia. The property is gorgeous, the setting equally so, and there is a great range of activities to be enjoyed on its 1000 acre estate; there is an excellent spa, a swimming pool, a gym, a children’s playground, tennis courts, hot tubs, two bars, and three restaurants, one of which is consistently rated as one of Granada’s best. THE ACCOMMODATION: As you’ll see on the booking page, there is a huge range of rooms and suites to choose from, all of which are top of the range luxury. You can expect spacious, individually styled units with wood beamed ceilings, seating areas with plasma TVs & DVD players, and very lavish, marble bathrooms some of which have spa bath/hot tub. Outside they also all have some private space, in the form of a garden, terrace or balcony area. The grounds are beautiful, as mentioned, the entire property has the look and feel of a traditional Andalusian village and is a lovely place to wander around, both the ‘Village’ itself, and the 1000 estate on which it stands, with its lush gardens, olive groves and oak woodlands, and its lovely views of the surrounding countryside. You can hire bikes, and quad bikes, from the hotel and arrange horse riding, guided tours etc. If you have the kids in tow and you would like some freedom you can also leave them at the Mini Club, where they will be looked after with games and activities supervised by the staff. Among the three restaurants La Finca is the most famous and offers fine dining in an elegant atmosphere (Dress code alert: no shorts, tee shirts or trainers). It has won several accolades over the years for its seasonal Spanish/Andalusian, mainly organic fare and is Granada Province’s only five star restaurant. PortugalAlong the banks of the Corgo River, Quinta do Vallado is one of the most famous winery estates in the Douro Valley with a history going all the way back to 1716. It once belonged to the pioneering port wine maker, Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, and still belongs to her descendents today. It is now a modern, luxury boutique hotel, but also with more traditional style accommodation in the old manor house, and you can expect the very best in comfort, service, and of course food and wine. It also has spa facilities, an outdoor swimming pool and a jacuzzi. THE ACCOMMODATION: They have a range of lovely rooms and suites 5 of them in the old manor house, and 8 in a new, rather unusual looking, modern wing, built back in 2012 mainly from slate, another thing this region of Portugal is well known for. The manor house rooms are a bit more traditional though it would be a stretch to call them rustic. The emphasis is generally on comfort and modern style, something which is even more in abundance in the sleek modern wing where the rooms all come with balconies and some superb views. The pick of the bunch there is the suite; a nicely designed 43 sq m space with a living room, bedroom and a balcony looking out on the vineyards and the river. There is an excellent buffet breakfast to be enjoyed every morning plus you can treat yourself to some great evening meals, and snacks throughout the day. Food lovers will also appreciate the chef’s own cooking classes, ask at reception, or at the restaurant, for details. Not forgetting the wine; Quinta do Vallado is one of the most famous vineyard & winery in the Douro Valley with over 100 acres of vine and a long history of producing fantastic port as well as Douro Valley whites and reds. And, as an extra, they also produce their own extra virgin olive oil. All can be sampled throughout your stay and you can of course also buy some to take home. Wine tasting sessions can be had too, as well as cellar and vineyard READ MORE - Address: Str. di S. Benedetto, 58

PortugalQuinta do Rocha is ideally placed for a relaxing break in the heart of some of Portugal’s most lovely countryside; the northern part of the country’s largest vineyard region; Vinho Verde. They have B&B accommodation in a beautiful old mansion farm house, surrounded by vineyards and orchards, which has been in the same family for generations. It is beautifully situated on a lightly wooded hillside with an outdoor swimming pool in the gardens, and the views all around are really quite stunning. THE ACCOMMODATION: The house is large and has a great range of rooms to choose from. All of them are double or twins, though there is one unit which consists of two connecting rooms that can sleep up to four people. They are all classic style, rustic and romantic, and have a nice air of old fashioned opulence. The entire house in fact, feels somewhat from a different, much more grand, era. There is lots of space both inside and out, and you can spend your days by the pool or exploring the orchards and vineyards and in the evenings enjoying a drink on the terrace, which will doubtless include some of their own home grown Vinho Verde wine. And you will be treated to a great breakfast every morning with fresh fruit juice from the farm’s own orchards. THE LOCATION: The Vinho Verde wine region takes up much of Portugal to the north of Porto and is the country’s largest wine growing region. The countryside around Quinta do Rocha, to the north of Braga is surprisingly under visited by foreign tourists, being as it is somewhat over-shadowed by the more well known Douro Valley just to the south, but it is a gorgeous terrain of forests, hills, meandering rivers and of course vineyards and a joy to explore for those who take the time. And for real wilderness we’d recommend a trip to the Peneda-Gerês National Park, just to the west of Quinta do Rocha, along the Spanish border. It has numerous hiking trails through forests and hills that are home to wolves, deer and golden eagles. PortugalVery near Coimbra, the 5 star Quinta das Lagrimas is part agroturismo, part Royal Palace and part luxury spa hotel, and had been a quiet sanctuary for Kings and Emperors for centuries, before recently opening its doors to paying guests. It is also the place where one of Portugal’s most infamous love stories took place; the story of Pedro & Inês. This was the XIVth-century love affair between Prince Pedro and Inês de Castro which lurched, as they all do, from deep romance to deep tragedy when Inês was murdered on the orders of King Alfonso, Pedro’s father. This famous story inspired the name of the property; Quinta das Lagrimas/The Estate of Tears, and these days it offers superb luxury in a setting that is uniquely atmospheric and compelling. THE ACCOMMODATION: There is a great choice of B&B rooms and suites, ranging from more standard doubles to superb, top of the range, suites. Even the most ‘basic’ of rooms though are lovingly styled and come with a real touch of class. It is a five star hotel and you can expect the best in comfort and facilities but Quinta das Lagrimas differs in that it is a grand, stately property with a romantic, cultured, air that is impossible to find in more modern hotels. It is a joy to just wander around and soak in the atmosphere. Add to that the extensive botanical gardens outside with so many rare plant species from around the world, the excellent spa facilities, the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the nine hole on site golf course and the two award winning gourmet restaurants, and you really have a break to remember. The seasonal restaurants serve up organic food that is locally sourced as much as is possible, ‘ Market Cuisine’ they like to call it here, but with much of the herbs, vegetables and fruits being sourced even closer, on the grounds themselves, picked fresh from the organic ‘Chef’s Garden’. United StatesNear the town of Meadview, in the wilds of northern Arizona, U.S.A., and just outside the Grand Canyon National Park, this is a great old style dude ranch that takes you right back to the 19th century, but with more modern comforts. It has a number of cosy cabins around the main ranch house, all comfortable and clean, and furnished in that classic, rustic western style; with wooden log walls and ceilings. They all have their own entrance too, and come with private bathroom, a study desk and fireplace. It also rents a couple of glamping tents with much the same facilities, except for the private bathrooms. Horseback riding is a big attraction here, with some great guided tours in the surrounding countryside where, if you like, you can also organize over night camping stays. You can organize horse drawn wagon rides too, buffalo safaris, night time cook outs around the camp fire and helicopter rides around the nearby Grand Canyon. In the main ranch house you’ll find plenty of excellent food cooked all day and served up in the dining room by an open fire, and there’s also the Diamond Bar with a good selection of wines and beers and live country music most evenings. The nearest airport is Grand Canyon West Airport, less than 20 miles away. Note: No WiFi! WHAT OTHER GUESTS SAY: “Superb! Be prepared – there is no wifi, no television and limited cell phone connection 😉 but there are also wonderful hours singing at the fire, amazing helicopter rides into the Grand Canyon and a marvellous night sky with millions of stars. United KingdomThis Yorkshire farm stay has a range of clean and comfortable self-catering holiday cottages on 42 acres of open pasture, meadow and woodland along with gardens and a children’s play area. The farm stay is just six miles outside the market town of Pickering, and has some very nice views over the North Yorkshire Moors. The friendly owners do not work the farm any more but they have their own hens and pet ducks while cattle from the neighbouring farm graze the fields. They have one, two and three bedroom cottages in converted farm buildings with some of the old, traditional features still intact, like the wooden beams in the ceiling. And they all come with a well-equipped kitchen and dining area, plus bathroom and a comfortable lounge with a TV and DVD player. The farm itself is a very relaxing place, to wander around, to take in the view from the picnic table or to watch out for the numerous wildlife that comes and goes. The surrounding area is terrific for exploring too, with the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and its famous steam railway just a short hop away. WHAT OTHER GUESTS SAY: “The whole family thought it was a wonderful holiday location. The peace, quiet and gorgeous surroundings. The farm animals, hens and wild bird watching. Vale of Glamorgan

United KingdomNot many people will know that there is a small wine producing industry in valleys of South Wales, but there is, and the luxury Llanerch Vineyard Hotel in Hensol, Vale of Glamorgan, is definitely a highlight, with top quality accommodation in a beautiful setting. THE ACCOMMODATION: Their rooms and suites are five star luxury; spacious and stylish, they are all en-suite and have a dining and sitting area with a study desk and flat screen TV and WiFi as standard. Outside there is plenty of space to relax in the well kept gardens and terrace, where weather permitting you can dine on the terrace also. THE FOOD & THE WINE: Once that surprise has been overcome the next surprise is that, despite the difficulties with, amongst other things the disagreeably inconsistent Welsh weather, the wines are actually good. They produce a range of award winning Cariad wines, all white at the moment due to the cool climate, though they say they have ambitions to produce a red in the future. So, a stay at Llanerch can teach you a lot about wine, with vineyard tours and tasting sessions for example, but it can also teach you about food, having a superb restaurant and bistro where celebrity chef Angela Gray heads the kitchen, and you can also join one of her almost daily cookery classes where you can learn a whole range of dishes, most with a Mediterranean twist, that fit their wines well. THE LOCATION: Such is the lovely, unique environment at Llanerch Vineyard Hotel that many people don’t venture much outside the grounds at all, but for those that do the countryside around the Vale of Glamorgan is famously lovely, with plenty of hiking trails through peaceful hills and woodlands. For golfers the nearest course is at Creigiau, about 10 minutes away by car. Note: No children and no pets allowed! WHAT OTHER GUESTS SAY: “Fantastic one night stay as attending a wedding locally. Beautiful, cosy rooms with huge comfortable bed. Hot, powerful shower and spotlessly clean. Staff were really friendly and the breakfast was delicious….” “What an amazing find, beautiful place just off the M4 but in the READ MORE - Address: 926 Stephenson Road, Tambo Upper

THE LOCATION: Though in a lovely isolated setting you are still only a few miles from the local village; Laugar where you can find a restaurant, a supermarket, a bank and a post office. Laugar also has its own outdoor geo-thermally heated swimming pool as well as hot tubs. The area around the farm stay is classically beautiful northern Icelandic territory, and great for long hikes into the hills or, as mentioned before horse riding. Nearby you’ll be impressed by Mývatn lake and nature baths, a well known tourist attraction in the area, about 40 mins drive away, as well as Goðafoss waterfall, closer even; about 15 minutes away. The entire region though is spectacular and awe inspiring in a way in which very few other places in Europe can compete. FranceChâteau de Labro is a luxury B&B vineyard hotel & spa near the town, and international airport, of Rodez in what is now known as the Occitanie region of France, formerly Midi-Pyrénées. The property is a 16th century château that oozes elegance and old world class both inside and out. The food, and the wine, is fantastic and outside there are some beautiful gardens, vineyards and a swimming pool. One little novelty of the place is that they also have a luxury treehouse among the orchard trees in which you can spend the night (Look out for it on the booking page!). THE ACCOMMODATION: The above mentioned treehouse is the most popular option which is usually booked out well in advance. It’s quite a thing, more like a luxury double studio apartment than a classic treehouse, it even has a chandelier for example. A lot of people though may prefer to stay in the actual château which has marvelously romantic rooms, with four poster beds and antique furniture. Most of the rooms are doubles but they also have a family room to sleep up to four and a self catering apartment which can also sleep up to four. All of the accommodation is of the very highest quality, it is a luxury hotel after all, but what separates Château de Labro from most is the beautifully old fashioned decor. It feels a little like stepping back in time, in a good way, especially in the bedrooms, where even the modern touches are consistently tasteful. The food at the chateau is a highlight, always in season and local as much as possible, and they have a suitably good wine list. It is a vineyard hotel after all and so produces its own Clos Labro, a white made from the 6 varieties of grape grown on site; Muscat Petit Grain, Petit Manseng, Colombard, Chardonnay and Viognier. It is not a commercial wine by any means, which makes it quite special; the vineyards are small, producing only 1500 bottles a year, and so the only place you can enjoy Clos Labro is actually at Château de Labro! You can relax around the gardens and READ MORE - Address: Kainisch 25
