For an authentic, unassuming, slice of rural bliss in South West France, Grand Jean Farm Stay, near Bergerac, Dordogne, Aquitaine, is as good as it gets. You can take horse riding lessons at Grand Jean, go for long country walks or just laze around the two outdoor swimming pools. You’ll find the place thoroughly charming, the hosts friendly and the location serene, and all the while being just a few miles from the famously lovely town of Bergerac.
There are three accommodation choices, all self catering, and all built of traditional Perigordian stone with quaint, old style steep roofs. There is a four bedroom cottage that can sleep up to 8 people, a small studio for up to 2 people, and a nicely restored two bedroom Barn Cottage for up to 5.
The four bed has plenty of space, 120 sq metres in total. You’ll find a fully equipped kitchen topped off with a nice old style bread oven, a living room with TV and DVD player and outside, a terrace with seating overlooking the gardens.
The studio is small, just 25 sq. metres, and is attached to the main farmhouse. The kitchen is small too, more of a kitchenette but covers the basics in terms of equipment and you should be able to cook up a good meal or two here, to be eaten at the dining table in the studio room itself or outside on the terrace/gardens.
The two bedroom cottage is a converted of 300 year-old barn that has its own private furnished patio nicely shaded by a plum tree, there’s a lounge with TV and DVD player too, a small kitchen and both bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms.
Outside there are nicely tended gardens with two swimming pools and plenty of space to relax.
The main activity at the farm is the keeping of horses and of course horse riding. They have years of experience teaching, you’ll find the lessons both helpful and enjoyable, and they can cater for all levels of ability.
You can also take a horse out on your own if you have the experience and there are some lovely trails through the surrounding countryside to be explored, which ıf course you can also traverse on foot.
The other animal attractions at grand Jean are the farm hens which wander around the gardens along with if you’re lucky some cute chicks too.
This being Aquitaine, South West France, the horse farm is surrounded by vineyards, with some of the world’s best wine being made in the vicinity. Your friendly hosts will be able to advise you on vineyard tours and wine tourism, and other activities in the surrounding area.
Doubtless you will want to take a stroll around the lovely town of Bergerac, just 3 miles down the road on the banks of the Dordogne River. The vieille ville, the old town, has some gorgeous little squares and streets to explore, and all sorts of interesting small shops, cafes and of course some superb restaurants.
Bergerac is also the main base for exploring the much loved Dordogne region of South Western France an area that has been charming foreign visitors, particularly British, for generations now. The nearest main city, and airport, is Bordeaux, around and hour to the west.
