Near the city of Florence and nearer still to Leonardo’s home town of Vinci, Chianti, Tuscany, Agriturismo Colle da Vinci is a classically rustic hillside farmhouse surrounded by organic olive groves and enjoys some stunning views of the Montalbano Valley, especially from the ideally placed swimming pool in the gardens. Hidden away in a lovely valley just north of Levanto, Liguria, Italy, Agriturismo Costelletta has easy access to the Cinque Terre, but without the hassles and the crowds. The area is peaceful, beautiful and green, and has some great hiking trails. The agriturismo grows grapes and olives on its rustic family farm, and the property has really tremendous views over the valley, and all the way down to the sea.
Their homely accommodation consists of an en-suite double room at the farmhouse, and an adjoining, quite large, one bedroom flat which can sleep up to four using the sofa bed in the living room. There is a well equipped kitchen there, and a comfortable lounge with plenty of space to make yourself at home.
The double room is B&B, and you’ll find the breakfast very good indeed, with homemade honey and jams amongst other little treats. The apartment is self catering but the owners kindly give you a nice fresh food pack for your first morning from which you can prepare your own breakfast pretty easily.
The exteriors of the agriturismo are quite exceptional. You can sit outside on the terrace at marvel at the great views; the valley below, the little medieval village of Legnaro and the sea 3km away down at Levanto.
It also has a lovely natural feel to it, nothing is too manicured, the gardens are awash with flowers and you can wander around the grape vines and olive groves and meet the hens, pheasants and even tortoises that call the place home.
You’ll also find the owners extremely helpful and friendly and are happy to show guests around the farm, and let them sample some of their homemade produce. They package and sell some of it at the farm and you are of course welcome to buy some to take home with you. They will also have some good tips about hiking in the local area, and the hiking trails around these parts are fantastic.
The hinterland of Levanto is a quiet, rural, peaceful place which has a much slower pace of life than the touristic coastline around Levanto and the Cinque Terre. If you like walking and hiking away from the crowds then you’ll find this area particularly enjoyable. It isn’t completely isolated though, you are right beside the nice little village of Legnaro and you’ll find one or two good restaurants around.
Levanto is just 3km away and you can drive it of course but if you can also walk there along some marked trails right from Agriturismo Costelletta that the owners can point out to you.
You can also set out for longer hikes down the hills to reach the Cinque Terre coast to the south. Again there are marked trails, which you will usually have just to yourself, and they offer some really extraordinary scenery.
The city of Genoa and its international airport, is about an hour to the north, with the fastest route being down the E20 highway, or you could take the more scenic SS1 coastal route for at least some of the journey.
