Agriturismo Villa Vignamaggio near Greve in Chianti, Tuscany, is quite a famous place whose main claim to fame is as the supposed birthplace of Leonardo De Vinci’s most famous subject; Mona Lisa.
It’s impossible to prove this of course but true or not it certainly feels like a place deeply in touch with Tuscan history. So much so in fact that it was actually used as a set for Kenneth Branagh’s 1993 movie version of the Shakespearen play Much Ado About Nothing.
They have a range of luxury rooms and suites in a 14th century, Renaissance era, villa, and some equally luxury self catering apartments in restored old farmhouses around the large estate which produces some award winning Chianti Classico wines & olive oil. There is an on site spa, a gym, tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool in the beautifully tended gardens.
The rooms and suites are in the main farmhouse, which is a gorgeously rustic building with plenty of common spaces, including a fine restaurant, a games room, a gym and a spa.
The accommodation at the main building ranges in size, with the largest sleeping up to four. You can expect luxury hotel standards and facilities here but with tasteful furniture and fittings that are generally in keeping with the historic nature of the property.
For more privacy you can also choose one of the self catering apartments in their own private area on the estate. These are equally luxurious, and again of varying sizes with the largest a full 250 meter squared and able to sleep up to 10 people.
The large estate is composed of olive groves, vineyards and an organic fruit orchard. The gardens are beautiful with an outdoor, infinity swimming pool and tennis courts, and offer plenty of space for lounging around or outdoor dining. There is also a large amount of woodland surrounding the villa with a number of marked trails to be explored.
The main business here is in the production of their own label Chianti Classico wines; reds, whites and rosé, and also some grappa, with the grapes hand harvested in September and October each year.
They produce olive oil too, they have extensive vegetable gardens and also a nice range of organic fruits; pomegranates, figs, plums, apples, apricots, and pears. And berries; raspberries, blackberries and currants. Finally they also have some, very well looked after, free range pigs on the farm.
They do a range of wine tourism activities at the agriturismo; tasting sessions and vineyard, winery and cellar tours. There is a top class restaurant at the property with much of the ingredients coming fresh from the farm, and if you are suitably impressed with the food you can try your hand at their cooking classes, ask for chef guided tours of the vegetable gardens and fruit orchards, and buy some of their products to take home at the farm shop.
Agriturismo Vignamaggio is near the town of Greve in Chianti, right in the heart of the Chianti Classico region and near two of Tuscany’s most important cities; Siena (35km) and Florence (33km).
Greve in Chianti is usually the first stop for visitors from Siena and Florence and the perfect introduction to the food and wine culture of this iconic region. There are many lovely small villages to be discovered in the surroundings, with the nearest to the agriturismo being the tiny, Roman era hamlet of Vitigliano just a few minutes away.
The countryside is a joy to explore, whether by driving, on foot or by bike, and you can hire bikes for free at the agriturismo. The landscapes are quintessentially Tuscan, with postcard like scenes around every winding turn of the roads. You’ll find the excellent staff at Agriturismo Vignamaggio can point you in all the right directions and they can also organize various tours and excursions should you so wish.
