Just 6 km from one of Tuscany’s most popular tourist towns, San Gimignano, but still gorgeously silent, peaceful and rural, Agriturismo Macinatico has an undeniably good location.
For those of you not yet familiar, this very historic town is on the itinerary of pretty much every visitor to rural Tuscany, so much so that it can get very packed, especially on weekends. So, in peak times, to really soak up the atmosphere, you’re advised to get there early in the morning.
What really makes it famous is the iconic medieval towers that dominate the town. They were built starting in the 13th-century by different rival Nobilities in a kind of medieval display of Dubai or Manhattan style bling. It also has some sturdy 13th-century fortress walls surrounding it, and so many beautiful little streets and alleys that, despite the tourist hordes, it still oozes history and character.
The old pilgrim route of Via Francigena ran from France, Switzerland and even England all the way down to Rome back in medieval times and runs through this area. It had many important stop offs along the way including the Sanctuary of Madonna di Pancole and the Pieve of S. Maria Assunta in Cellole, both of which can still be seen today, and you can follow the path on foot or by bike as it winds through some stunning countryside.
You can hire bikes for free at the agriturismo but be prepared for some hills! Especially the hill on the approach to San Gimignano.
