Along the banks of the Corgo River, Quinta do Vallado is one of the most famous winery estates in the Douro Valley with a history going all the way back to 1716. It once belonged to the pioneering port wine maker, Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, and still belongs to her descendents today.
It is now a modern, luxury boutique hotel, but also with more traditional style accommodation in the old manor house, and you can expect the very best in comfort, service, and of course food and wine. It also has spa facilities, an outdoor swimming pool and a jacuzzi.
THE ACCOMMODATION:
They have a range of lovely rooms and suites 5 of them in the old manor house, and 8 in a new, rather unusual looking, modern wing, built back in 2012 mainly from slate, another thing this region of Portugal is well known for.
The manor house rooms are a bit more traditional though it would be a stretch to call them rustic. The emphasis is generally on comfort and modern style, something which is even more in abundance in the sleek modern wing where the rooms all come with balconies and some superb views.
The pick of the bunch there is the suite; a nicely designed 43 sq m space with a living room, bedroom and a balcony looking out on the vineyards and the river.
There is an excellent buffet breakfast to be enjoyed every morning plus you can treat yourself to some great evening meals, and snacks throughout the day. Food lovers will also appreciate the chef’s own cooking classes, ask at reception, or at the restaurant, for details.
Not forgetting the wine; Quinta do Vallado is one of the most famous vineyard & winery in the Douro Valley with over 100 acres of vine and a long history of producing fantastic port as well as Douro Valley whites and reds. And, as an extra, they also produce their own extra virgin olive oil.
All can be sampled throughout your stay and you can of course also buy some to take home. Wine tasting sessions can be had too, as well as cellar and vineyard tours.
There is a nice lawn garden at Quinta do Vallado too; you’ll find a swimming pool there and plenty of space for lounging around in the shade of the orange trees.
THE LOCATION:
The Douro Valley region of Portugal has become quite famous in recent years mainly because of the wine of course but also for its gorgeous scenery. Its distinctive green vineyard covered hills and lovely to travel around and there is the river itself; a long, leisurely boat trip along the Douro is a great way to spend a day.
Wine enthusiasts will certainly find a great array of wine related activities in this area. As mentioned before, the vineyards of Quinta do Vallado are very famous but there are many more historical estates around and most do some form of wine tourism; tours, tasting sessions etc.
Many outdoor activities are gaining popularity in the Douro Valley these days too; water sports, horse riding, biking, golfing, hiking etc. You can arrange all this and more by talking with the friendly staff at the hotel, and they also have bikes that you can hire for free.
Quinta do Vallado is just ten minutes drive from the town of Peso da Régua, home of the Douro Museum, a small museum mainly focused on the wine industry and a good place to start off a tour of the area.
The lovely little city of Lamego, is around 15 minutes drive away to the south, with Vila Real around the same to the north. The journey from Porto should take a little over an hour. Transfers can be arranged from Porto and other cities and airports in the region by contacting the hotel before arrival.
WHAT OTHER GUESTS SAY:
“Every detail from the check-in, to the room, to the meals and service were exceptional. Staff were friendly and helpful and the facilities were second to none. We had booked for one night but loved it so much we stayed an extra night! PS the wines were pretty special too!….”
“Beautiful location and accommodation. We stayed in the ‘new’ wing which was very cool. We met others who were staying in the ‘old’ house and they were also delighted. Evening meal out on the patio overlooking the Douro Valley- a perfect night. Also enjoyed the wine tour and tasting that was included….”
